Short verdict
Apex is a wired CMOS intraoral X-ray sensor positioned for US practices that want published pricing and broader software options without automatically buying into a premium imaging ecosystem. Its strongest procurement case is straightforward: DentalSensors.com publishes prices for Size 1 and Size 2 packages, lists a TWAIN driver and a long compatibility list, includes remote installation and a year of training and technical support, and provides a two-year limited manufacturer warranty.
That does not make Apex the automatic “best” sensor. The most important performance questions—diagnostic image quality in your exposure and software environment, positioning comfort across patient groups, cable durability in daily use, and actual support turnaround—cannot be settled from the vendor’s specifications. The official technical page also lists Windows versions only through Windows 10, so a buyer using Windows 11 should demand written confirmation of the exact driver, imaging application, workstation, and acquisition workflow before ordering.
For a budget-sensitive US practice, Apex deserves a live demo or documented trial alongside DentiMax Open Sensor and at least one established ecosystem option such as DEXIS Ti2 or Carestream RVG 6200. International buyers should treat it as a research candidate only until Masterlink confirms sale, regulatory status, service, shipping, tax, and warranty coverage in their country.
Price and package
DentalSensors.com’s public US pricing page lists one Size 1 Apex sensor at $3,495 (approximately €2,987) and one Size 2 sensor at $3,995 (approximately €3,415). The EUR figures are approximate conversions using an ECB reference rate; they are not European offers. Taxes, local duties, payment fees, and regional availability may change the amount a buyer actually pays.
The published package is more useful than a bare hardware price because it lists sensor holders and covers, remote internet installation, a practice-management-software bridge, USB extensions, shipping, a 30-day return policy, a two-year manufacturer warranty, and one year of training and technical support. Still, obtain a written order summary. Confirm the number and type of holders and covers, whether the imaging software itself is included or separately licensed, the cost of support after year one, and the terms of any SensorCare accidental-damage plan.
Published price transparency is a real shortlisting advantage. It makes initial budgeting easier than quote-only alternatives. It is not a full total-cost-of-ownership figure: replacement sensors, cable service, workstation changes, imaging-software licenses, backups, cybersecurity work, and staff time can matter as much as the purchase price.
Sourced specifications
Masterlink’s technical page identifies Apex as a CMOS APS sensor using a fibre-optic plate and a CsI:Tl scintillator. It lists two sizes:
- Size 1: 25.0 × 39.0 mm body, 20 × 30 mm active area, 1.5 million image pixels, and a 1000 × 1500 matrix.
- Size 2: 30.4 × 41.9 mm body, 26 × 34 mm active area, 2.2 million image pixels, and a 1300 × 1700 matrix.
- Both sizes: 5.3 mm stated thickness, 20 μm pixels, 25 lp/mm theoretical resolution, more than 20 lp/mm measured resolution, a 2 m cable, and USB/TWAIN connectivity.
These are purchasing specifications, not proof that one sensor produces diagnostically superior images. Resolution numbers are especially easy to overinterpret because the displayed result depends on the full imaging chain: exposure settings, generator, positioning, sensor, acquisition driver, image processing, monitor, and operator technique. Ask for uncompressed sample images produced through the exact software configuration you plan to use and arrange a controlled demonstration where possible.
Masterlink describes the sensor as IP67 and promotes resistance to dust and water. The warranty instructions create an important nuance: the legal warranty page says complete immersion in sterilizing fluid is not recommended and may invalidate the warranty. Follow the current instructions for use and written cleaning guidance, not a marketing headline, and confirm which disinfectants and contact times are accepted.
Software compatibility and workflow
Apex’s value depends heavily on whether it works reliably with the practice’s current imaging stack. Masterlink says the sensor includes a TWAIN driver and lists compatibility with XVWeb/XrayVision plus platforms including DEXIS V10 and newer, Eaglesoft Advanced Imaging, VixWin, Carestream software, Dentrix Ascend, Schick CDR DICOM, Sidexis, XDR, Planmeca Romexis, Curve Hero, tab32, and others. A Dentrix Imaging Center guide also lists DentalSensors.com Apex among supported acquisition devices, which gives narrow third-party corroboration for that particular software context.
Treat every compatibility statement as version-specific. “Works with” can mean native acquisition, a TWAIN bridge, a launcher, or a separate imaging application. Those paths differ in patient lookup, image filing, tooth-number assignment, enhancement tools, multi-site deployment, and support ownership.
Before buying, ask the supplier to demonstrate all of the following on your current versions:
- selecting the patient from the practice-management system;
- launching acquisition without duplicate patient entry;
- capturing and assigning a complete series;
- applying and saving preferred image-processing settings;
- exporting and backing up images without proprietary lock-in surprises;
- using the sensor from every intended operatory and workstation;
- identifying who supports the issue when the sensor, driver, bridge, or PMS vendor blames another layer.
The official specification page’s Windows list appears dated. Do not interpret the absence of Windows 11 as proof of incompatibility, but do require a written support statement for the exact Windows build and software versions you will deploy.
Warranty, returns, and ownership risk
The published limited warranty runs for two years from the original invoice date and is non-transferable. The stated remedy is repair or replacement with an equivalent product, determined by Masterlink; it does not promise a cash refund for a defective unit. Claims require an RMA, proof of purchase, prepaid insured return shipping, and appropriate packaging.
The exclusions matter. The warranty page excludes damage linked to misuse, improper installation, alteration, mishandling, third-party products, pulling on the cable, severe bends, drops, heavy objects, and other physical damage. It also gives specific handling and sheath instructions. Practices should train staff around cable strain and sensor removal, because accidental damage can fall outside the standard warranty even when the product is marketed as rugged.
Masterlink separately describes a SensorCare protection option with discounted accidental replacement and loaner-shipping benefits. Because plan pricing and conditions can change, obtain the current agreement and model the cost over three to five years. Ask whether coverage is per sensor, whether replacements are new or refurbished, how many incidents are allowed, what overnight shipping actually covers, and whether a replacement restarts or merely continues the original coverage period.
The 30-day return policy can reduce evaluation risk, but verify when the clock starts, whether opened and clinically used sensors qualify, whether software or setup fees are refundable, and who pays return freight. Do not rely on the short summary alone.
Evidence-backed positives and limitations
Reasons to shortlist Apex
- Public US prices and a described package make first-pass budgeting possible.
- Size 1 and Size 2 options cover two common practice needs.
- The listed 5.3 mm body is relatively thin on paper.
- TWAIN plus the vendor’s broad software list may help practices avoid a complete imaging-platform replacement.
- Remote installation, PMS bridging, training/support, and a two-year limited warranty are included in the published package.
- The warranty document is public and spells out claim steps and exclusions.
Reasons to remain cautious
- Dental Spec Guide has not tested image quality, comfort, durability, installation, or service.
- Most product evidence is supplied by Masterlink; independent performance evidence is limited.
- Compatibility must be proven on the buyer’s exact software and operating-system versions.
- The standard warranty excludes many common forms of physical damage and is non-transferable.
- Published prices and support are US-focused; international availability and regulatory status are unknown.
- The product page and warranty language on water exposure need to be reconciled through current written cleaning instructions.
Alternatives to compare
DentiMax Open Sensor is the closest price-led alternative in this shortlist. DentiMax publishes US pricing and describes a thin, direct-USB sensor with multiple sizes, broad software integration, and a warranty/protection proposition. Compare the exact sensor size, included software, current stock, warranty wording, and support response rather than relying on headline prices.
DEXIS Ti2 is an ecosystem-led alternative. DEXIS positions Ti2 around CleanCapture processing, its PerfectSize format, reinforced housing/cable design, proactive monitoring, and access to DEXIS software and 2D AI features. It may suit a practice already committed to DEXIS, but the hardware, software, support, and replacement-plan costs require a quote.
Carestream RVG 6200 is a two-size premium alternative with published dimensions, 24 lp/mm measured resolution, TWAIN support, CS Adapt processing, and Carestream’s CS Imaging workflow. It deserves consideration when Carestream integration and local dealer support matter more than up-front public pricing.
Used or refurbished sensors can cost less, but warranty transfer, cable condition, driver access, software licensing, decontamination history, and second-owner support create separate risks. Use the used dental equipment guide before treating a used sensor as equivalent to a supported new purchase.
Questions to ask before purchase
- Is this exact sensor cleared or registered for sale and supported in my country?
- Can you demonstrate acquisition in my exact PMS, imaging software, Windows version, and workstation configuration?
- Which software, bridge, drivers, training, holders, covers, cables, and support services are included?
- What happens after the included first year of support, and what does continued support cost?
- Which cleaning agents and processes are approved, and how do they align with the current instructions for use?
- What does the standard warranty exclude, and what are the current SensorCare price and replacement terms?
- If a sensor fails, is a loaner available, who pays shipping, and what is the expected turnaround?
- Can the practice test the sensor with representative bitewing, periapical, endodontic, and difficult-positioning cases before final acceptance?
Evidence limit: This page does not assess radiation technique, prescribe exposures, interpret radiographs, or claim that Apex improves diagnosis or patient outcomes. Follow the device instructions, local regulations, and guidance from qualified imaging and radiation-protection professionals.
